Transitional Living

Sober, structured housing during outpatient treatment — the bridge between residential care and going back to ordinary life.

Why transitional housing matters

The move from a 24/7 treatment environment back to a previous living situation is one of the most relapse-prone moments in recovery. Transitional living bridges that gap with structure, accountability, and a sober community while a person continues clinical care during the day.

Who it's for

Transitional living is most often used by clients who:

  • Just finished residential or PHP and aren't ready to return to a high-stress home environment
  • Don't have a stable place to live yet
  • Live somewhere that includes active substance use
  • Want the continuity of a sober environment while they finish outpatient treatment and re-establish work and routines

What it includes

  • Sober environment — random drug screens, no substances on site, no visitors using
  • Structure — house meetings, curfews, chores, accountability without it being institutional
  • A peer community of others doing the same work
  • Coordination with the clinical team — outpatient, individual therapy, MAT, psychiatric care
  • Connection to recovery community meetings nearby (12-step, SMART Recovery, etc.)

What's expected of residents

  • Active engagement in clinical care (outpatient, therapy, MAT as appropriate)
  • Random drug and alcohol testing
  • Attendance at house meetings
  • Working, looking for work, or actively in school after the first 30 days
  • Participation in a recovery community of choice

How long people stay

There's no fixed minimum, but the longer the better. Three to six months is typical, and there's good evidence that stays of 90 days or more meaningfully improve long-term outcomes. The right length is the one that gets a person to stable independent living without rushing it.

Cost

Transitional living is typically a self-pay component, paid weekly or monthly, separate from the clinical insurance billing. Admissions can walk you through the structure and the typical cost range.
